First, patients are assessed by our multidisciplinary team and provided with a comprehensive treatment plan. Patients can access these assessments by referral from a physician, physiotherapist, or chiropractor with a valid Practitioner ID. Assessments are covered with a valid Alberta health care card.
By performing a triage assessment, Access Orthopaedics assists in getting the ‘right patient to the right practitioner at the right time.’ 
If surgery is required, patients are referred to the provider most suited to assist with their condition. This referral happens in a timely fashion and with the appropriate imaging to avoid further treatment delays.

Meet Our Orthopaedic Surgeons

Dr. Ian Lo,

MD, FRCSC

Dr. Lo is the Chief of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Surgery, at the University of Calgary. He specializes in the arthroscopic treatment of shoulder conditions and has pioneered several arthroscopic shoulder procedures. He holds multiple patents for innovative products designed to improve shoulder surgery. Dr. Lo has twice been awarded the ASES Neer Award, the organization’s highest distinction for shoulder research. He is the recipient of the AANA Stephen Burkhart Award, COA Founder’s Medal, and Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation Legacy award, all for shoulder research.

Dr. Rachel Schachar,

MD, MSc, FRCSC

Dr. Schachar has published in several peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy. She is actively involved in undergraduate medical education at the University of Calgary as an instructor in the musculoskeletal undergraduate curriculum and as a mentor in the medical student mentorship program.

Dr. David Sheps,

MD, MSc, MBA, FRCSC

Dr. Sheps is a founding member of the Shoulder and Upper Extremity Research Group of Edmonton (SURGE) and plays a key role in upper extremity research at the University of Alberta. He is the past secretary for the Canadian Shoulder and Elbow Society (CSES) and is leading the development of national shoulder rehabilitation protocols in collaboration with CSES. He is also guiding the development of patient information materials for shoulder disorders in collaboration with the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation (COF).
